2009 Jetta Diesel Wins 2009 Green Car of the Year from the green Journal
This is an important time for ‘green cars,’ even amid some of the most challenging times the auto industry has ever seen. The reasons are clear. In many ways, ‘green’ cars represent the future of the auto industry and the products that will enable our mobility in the years to come.
It’s no longer an option for automakers to address the efficiency and environmental impact of new models, but rather an imperative. It will become even more so as environmental performance, in all its forms, becomes a greater touchstone for new car buyers.

In fact, environmental performance already is viewed as an important measure of a new car. While not yet on par with more traditional touchstones such as safety or quality, environmental performance – especially when it includes higher fuel economy and lower carbon emissions – has taken on greater meaning in this era of high and unstable fuel costs.
Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year® program is the industry leading measure of environmental progress, identifying the one vehicle model that offers the most significant achievement in this area during the new model year. This year, GCOY nominees included a diverse crowd, among them the BMW 335d, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Saturn Vue 2 Mode Hybrid, and smart fortwo.
The winner, just announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show, is the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI. This is the first time that a clean diesel model has been awarded the title Green Car of the Year®.

The 2009 Jetta TDI breaks new ground in the field of clean diesels, achieving emissions certification in all 50 states without the use of special additives or extraordinary measures. It provides five passenger functionality with welcome levels of power and a satisfying driving experience. Importantly, it also achieves estimated highway fuel economy of 41 mpg with greatly reduced greenhouse gas emissions. That’s a rarified fuel economy number typically achieved by only the most efficient gasoline-electric hybrids. The clean diesel Jetta TDI matches this efficiency with a powerplant that’s more straightforward and affordable, allowing the Jetta TDI an affordable $21,990 price tag.
Selecting the 2009 Green Car of the Year® was a jury including four Green Car Journal editors and a larger number of invited jurors including automotive icon Carroll Shelby; auto expert and ‘Tonight Show’ host Jay Leno; Sierra Club executive director Carl Pope; Natural Resources Defense Council president Frances Beinecke; and Ocean Futures Society president Jean-Michel Cousteau.

10-01-08 - The Routan Minivan has arrived! Call to make your test drive appointment today!
Volkswagen Returns to the Van with Routan The 2009 Routan is a seven-passenger Volkswagen van based on Chrysler’s proven Town & Country minivan platform. Routan has a distinctly German flavor, especially inside, but this is not your father’s Microbus. The newly introduced 2009 Routan has as much “Farfurgnugen” as Volkswagen could feed the American-designed minivan. The front end of the Routan has an unmistakable VW look and several other exterior items are different on this variant. The headlamps, taillamps, side mirrors and sheetmetal creases do evoke the VW look. The Routan interior is convincingly VW. Volkswagen redesigned the instrument panel and created a VW center stack. These elements are what you might expect in a Wolfsburg-sourced van. The Routan’s seating is divided 2/2/3 with dual captains’ chairs in place in both the first and second rows. The upholstery has a V-dub look and feel, which is to say modern and inviting. The two-tone décor featuring a black upper dashboard contrasting with tan elsewhere is continental, and the fit and finish are arguably higher quality than that of the competition. Napa Valley leather seating surfaces are on the option list. The Routan offers your choice of two power units, the standard engine being a 3.8-liter V6 with 197 hp and 230 lb/ft of torque. Volkswagen says to expect 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway with the 3.8-liter motor. The optional 4.0-liter V6 develops 251 hp and 259 lb/ft of torque. A six-speed automatic does the honors with each engine. With the 4.0-liter engine, VW says to expect 17 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway. The minivan shape offers the most useable space of any vehicle type. For example, remove the third-row seat, and VW says you'll find a total of 83 cubic feet worth of storage space aft of the second row. Volkswagen has also put its ingenuity to work on those essential consoles, cubbies and shelves. Cavernous underfloor storage wells swallow an amazing amount of stuff. There’s a nifty overhead storage unit that’s standard on some models, and the removable three-part floor console (standard on the upscale SEL model) between the front seats is large and flexible with its sliding/removable trays, a power outlet, deep compartment and CD organizer. The 2009 Routan is as safe as minivans come with essential driver’s aids including four-wheel antilock disc brakes, hydraulic brake assist and standard traction control with electronic stability control. In addition to the expected front airbags, the Routan has full-length side-curtain airbag coverage as well. All this adds up to a class-leading Five-Star score in crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As for handling, Volkswagen gave the Routan a European ride and tweaked the shocks and steering for crisp maneuvering. Car and Driver liked how the Routan handled. “The VW gets unique springs, dampers and bushings that better control body motions. It’s actually fun for a minivan and approaching the intervention threshold for the standard stability control is less terrifying and involves less seasickness than in the Chryslers. The Routan shrugs off bumps as well with dynamically and audibly muted responses from the suspension.” There are some good reasons to favor the 2009 Volkswagen Routan over competing minivans. First, you’ll enjoy a nicer interior with the quality sensations VW is known for creating. Second, you’ll like the way the Routan handles with none of the roll and wallow associated with other minivans. Finally, you’ll like the price: a base MSRP of just $24,700. That’s not much more than a fully optioned Jetta or GTI, and far short of the price tag should VW ever introduce a new version of the Microbus. Hey, seeing is believing and the proof is in the driving. Why not give the 2009 Volkswagen Routan a spin? You’d be surprised what a little “Farfurgnugen” can do! See more pictures at http://www.miramarvw.com/routan.php and CALL TODAY TO ARRANGE YOUR TEST DRIVE 1-866-553-9040!
The 2009 Routan speaks German with a Detroit accent.
The Routan benefits from being based on one of the best-sorted minivans on the market, one of the good things about outsourcing the Routan. Another advantage is getting all the bells and whistles Americans want. In that regard, the Routan is well optioned with all the right conveniences. No fewer than 13 cupholders can be found inside while the information and entertainment options are topnotch. VW calls their 30-gig hard drive/audio/visual/navigation system the “Joy Box.” It consists of two nine-inch screens for the second and third rows, and a touchscreen navigation unit with the 30-gig hard drive sits atop the center stack. A conversation mirror, power liftgate and power sliding doors are on the option list.

The Jetta TDI meets emission standards in all 50 states including California!
The Jetta TDI uses a unique system to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 90 percent. The next generation Volkswagen Jetta TDI is ready to go and will be in the showroom mid-summer!
It uses a 2.0-liter "BlueMotion" diesel four-cylinder engine that meets emissions standards in all 50 states, employing an innovative way of dealing with the “diesel demon,” nitrogen oxide. NOx is accumulated in a catalyst-lined device. Periodically, the engine management system changes the vehicle's operating mode to treat the nitrogen oxide it has stored up, reducing NOx emissions by up to 90 percent. A particulate filter in the exhaust system further reduces emissions.
The new 2.0-liter diesel engine develops 140 hp and 236 lb/ft of torque and works with either a six-speed manual or DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) automated manual transmission.
The 2009 Jetta TDI is one of the first products of the BlueTec offensive initiated jointly by Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen. The goal of this partnership was to establish the BlueTec as a recognized label for clean and highly fuel efficient diesel-powered cars and SUVs with 50-state compliant engines.
The Volkswagen approach to controlling NOx and particulate emissions is unique among BlueTec diesel engines. Most use a complicated urea injection system to treat the NOx before it is neutralized in the vehicle’s catalytic converter. By contrast, the Volkswagen system accumulates the gases and destroys them within the combustion process.
Reviewers who have driven the 2009 Jetta TDI say they were pleasantly surprised by the transparency of not just the technology keeping the car clean, but the diesel engine overall. Diesel “clatter” is nearly undetectable. The engine sound is a bit deeper than the tone we associate with gas-powered motors. Horsepower in this new 2.0-liter common-rail diesel engine is up 40 percent over Jetta’s previous 1.9-liter four-cylinder with an impressive 33 percent increase in torque. That prodigious amount of torque means quick launches followed by brisk acceleration. Volkswagen uses a common-rail fuel injection system utilizing high-pressure piezoelectric fuel injectors that better atomize the fuel and make it easier to control emissions.
Volkswagen bills the Jetta as an “upscale economy car” and fulfills buyer expectations by giving them far more than they expect for the price tag, including European styling, a well-appointed cabin and nimble driving dynamics and excellent Fuel Economy. The EPA estimates are in at 29 City/ 40 Highway, while an Independent third party testing AMCI, the industry leader in vehicle tesing shows it to be significantly higher with 38 city and 44 hwy MPG. (24.4% overdelivery)
According to VW, the TDI will be equipped with 6 speed manual or 6 speed Automatic DSG gearbox. Standard equipment will include a 10 speaker in dash MP3 readable 6 CD Changer with Auxiliary input, AM/FM and SIRIUS Satellite radio*, 6 airbags, Heatable front seats, 8 way power front seats with adjustable lumbar support and 2 way power recline, Vtex leatherette seats, Multi-function trip computer, Front & rear reading lights, 2 front/2 rear cupholders, Front/rear floor mats, 60/40 split fold flat rear seats with center armrest passthrough, Power windows with pinch protection, door locks & Electro-mechanical power steering w/variable assistance, Outside temperature display, Heated washer nozzles, European-tuned 4 corner independent suspension, Electronic Stabilization Control (ESP)with Anti slip Regulation and Electronic Differential Lock, 16” alloy wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes, Tire Pressure Monitoring system and much more.
Optional equipment includes iPod adapter, DVD Navigation system with MDI, touch screen, integrated 30 GB hard drive, audio CD and memory card slot, 17” Avignon wheels, power glass tilt/slide sunroof , (Panoramic power sunroof available on the Sportwagen only)
The Volkswagen Jetta is crafted with high-quality materials. The Jetta’s tall profile creates a sense of spaciousness, especially in the front seats. Legroom is ample, front and rear. Jetta’s trunk capacity measures an impressive 16 cubic feet.
On the road, the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta achieves the often-elusive combination of a comfortable ride and agile handling. Jetta owners rave about its rock-solid feel and a quiet cabin.
With four-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction control and stabilization program, the Jetta is equipped to help a driver maneuver out of dangerous situations including skids. If an accident cannot be avoided, Jetta is equipped with seat-mounted side airbags for front occupants and full-length side-curtain airbags on both sides. In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash tests, the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta received four out of five stars for protection of front seat occupants in head-on collisions and five stars for front- and rear-occupant protection in side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Jetta a top score of "Good" in its frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests.
With the 2009 Jetta TDI, Volkswagen takes the lead in introducing American drivers to clean diesel power, an engine that Europeans have embraced with enthusiasm, not only for its fuel economy, but for its performance as well. In addition to clean diesel fuel economy and range combined with three years of Carefree scheduled maintenance*, make the prospect of TDI ownership economical, fun and worry-free!

Last update: 2:31 p.m. EDT Sept. 29, 2008
HERNDON, Va., Sept 29, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The world's most fuel efficient couple, John and Helen Taylor, have broken the current world record for lowest fuel consumption across the 48 contiguous United States averaging 58.82 miles to the gallon. They ended their 20 day trip in West Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008. To help them break the world record, they drove the all-new, 50-state-compliant clean diesel Volkswagen Jetta TDI, fueled by Shell Ultra Low Sulfur diesel fuel under real world driving conditions, simply applying easy to use fuel saving tips and the latest efficient engine technology available for good clean diesel fun.
"We are very excited and grateful to have broken the current Guinness World Record for lowest fuel consumption across the 48 contiguous United States," said Helen Taylor. Not Your Regular Station Wagon
Say hello to the new era of station wagons where style, fuel-efficiency and coolness meet.
This isn’t the station wagon that the Brady Bunch drove, but we’re sure if they had the chance to drive Volkswagen’s 2009 Jetta SportWagen, they would have. Built on the Golf/Jetta platform, the VW SportWagen breaks down the stereotype of the station wagon, delivering a stylish ride. The VW SportWagen has three engine choices depending on the trim you choose. The base 2.5-liter five-cylinder (for the S and SE trims) produces 170 hp and 177 lb/ft of torque and is paired with either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Take it up a notch with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that churns out 200 hp and 207 lb/ft of torque available on the SEL trim. However, the biggest nod goes to the TDI’s 50-state approved 2.0-liter clean diesel engine that delivers 140 hp and 235 lb/ft of torque and runs on B5 biodiesel. On the road, the VW SportWagen is definitely a driver’s car with adjustable steering wheel, well-placed dead pedal and firmly supportive buckets. The Turbo engine is quick, smooth and responsive, and all SportWagens have MacPherson struts in the front and independent multilink rear suspension that’s taut and supple. The SportWagen is a mix of the current Golf/Jetta and features Saab-esque designs (think large wraparound rear taillamps). The wagon gets a sportier looking rear-end treatment with dual exhaust tips, and the chrome grille gives it an even more distinctive look. In typical Volkswagen fashion, the interior of the SportWagen is attractive and well laid out. Its gauges are large and easy-to-read and the HVAC controls as the simple three-round-knobs setup. The seating is comfortable and supportive and has a power adjustor for the seatback and manual adjusters for the fore-aft position and the bottom cushion angle. The back of the wagon is large with an available cargo volume of 32.8 cubic feet with all the seats upright and 66.9 cubic feet with the backseats folded down. The SportWagen has three available trims, S, SE and SEL, but instead of separating the SportWagen’s options into three different trim levels, Volkswagen leaves them as checklists during the ordering process. There is plenty of standard equipment including its eight-speaker premium stereo, huge power sliding panoramic sunroof (a whopping 12.7 square feet!), touchscreen navigation system with iPod connector or console-mounted CD changer and rearview camera. Standard safety features include standard airbags (driver, head/curtain, passenger and side), child door locks, engine immobilizer and traction control. The VW SportWagen has a base MSRP of $18,999 and a fully loaded SEL turbocharged is just over $27,000. Good looks and smooth, even fuel-efficient ride? The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen has all that – get ready to be the cool kid on the block.
Estimated fuel economy for the SportWagen is 21 miles per gallon in the city and 29 miles per gallon on the highway. Although no official fuel economy figures were available, it is estimated that the diesel engine will get around 40 miles per gallon in the city and potentially 60 miles per gallon on the highway.

What Do You Get When You Cross a Tiger With an Iguana?
Why, the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan, of course! Get ready for this compact SUV to take over the roads.
A cross between a tiger and an iguana? No, it’s not a science experiment gone horribly wrong, it’s where the name came from for Volkswagen’s 2009 Tiguan. Names aside, what you get is a vehicle that provides a supple ride, compact dimensions and solid chassis, a vehicle that will make VW’s mark in the world of compact SUVs. Under the hood, the Tiguan comes standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that churns out 200 hp and 108 lb/ft of torque. You’ll have the choice between a manual and automatic transmission, both six-speeds. If you add 4Motion four-wheel drive, the automatic transmission is the only option. On the road, the 2009 VW Tiguan is well behaved without feeling lightweight or acting skittish (it tips the scales with a listed curb weight of 3,505 pounds – 20 pounds lighter than the CR-V). Its body is poised through corners, and the tires remain firmly planted on the ground while pounding their way through the roads and tracking steadily. For the rougher roads, the independent front suspension is combined with wishbone-type control arms, and MacPherson struts are mounted on a stout aluminum subframe. Borrowing from the all-wheel drive VW Passat, the Tiguan’s independent rear suspension features a four-link set up. For even more durability, there’s high-strength steel in the frame along with heavy-duty dampers. The Tiguan boasts hatchback genes – built on the same chassis as the VW Rabbit and VW GTI – and has a friendly size. It sits on a wheelbase of 102.5 inches, measuring 174.3 inches long, 71.2 inches wide and 66.3 inches high. Estimated gas mileage for the Tiguan is 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The 2009 VW Tiguan is available in three trim levels: S, SE and SEL. Available features include a panoramic sunroof, backup camera, touch-screen navigation system and 30GB hard drive for music storage. The new navigation system utilizes a touchscreen interface that’s easier to use than older VW navigation systems. There is also an optional factory-installed trailer hitch. The Tiguan has a bevy of standard safety features including ABS with front and rear disc brakes, dual front airbags, front side airbags, front and rear head-curtain airbags and an electronic stability program. The crash-optimized front end has impact-absorbing elements that allow compression of the front structure during impact – the energy on impact goes into the car and not you. This compact SUV starts with a base MSRP of $23,200; a loaded up SEL will top $30,000. Affordable, stylish and, of course, a great name. The 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan is ready to take over the roads.
Sit inside the Tiguan and you’ll feel as if you’re in a Rabbit, only larger. The extra room is due in part to the tall roof and the tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The front seats offer six inches of fore and aft adjustment, and the rear seats have plenty of room for adults. The cargo bay offers 16.6 cubic feet of available capacity, and when the 60/40-split backseat is folded flat, the maximum cargo volume is 53 cubic feet. The interior design and trim are straight from the Rabbit/GTI – the same gauges and switchgear, all in the same place. Setting the Tiguan apart from these models is the faux metallic trim around the new navigation unit.
